The question is not "which route is best" but "which route matches how much differentiation your market needs, and how fast you need to be selling."

The three routes

RouteWhat it meansBest whenTrade-off
Existing platformSource a proven product direction, optionally with your branding. You need to be selling fast, or test a category before committing.Less differentiation — competitors can source the same platform.
ModificationChange an existing product: appearance, materials, mechanism, packaging. You want visible difference without full development. Some tooling; how much depends on which parts change.
New development (ODM)Design and tool a new product from a concept. The product itself is your differentiator, or no platform fits your requirement.Highest cost and lead time; needs more input from you.

What each route asks of you

Existing platform

  • Your market, channel and target price band.
  • Phone size range and required mounting position.
  • Branding and packaging requirements.

Modification

  • Everything above, plus a clear statement of what should change and what must stay.
  • Reference material showing the direction you want.
  • Willingness to accept some tooling and a longer timeline than a straight platform.

New development

  • A concept: sketch, drawing, 3D file, or a described use case.
  • Requirements: function, phones, mounting, materials, market.
  • Volume expectation and a realistic development timeline.

Rule of thumb: start from an existing platform unless the product itself is your reason to exist. Modify when the difference matters to your customer. Develop new when nothing on the market fits — and you have the time and volume to justify it.

What must be confirmed per project

Whichever route you choose, the specifics — materials, tooling scope, samples, MOQ, pricing and lead time — are confirmed for your project rather than quoted as fixed numbers. The route decides what needs confirming, not whether confirmation is needed.

Next step

Prepare your inputs with the sourcing brief checklist, and see the OEM / ODM workflow for how a project moves from brief to production. For a first quote, read what to confirm before requesting a quote.
