A vague inquiry gets a placeholder price that does not survive contact with reality. The inputs below are what let a manufacturer quote something you can actually plan around.

The inputs that change a quote

InputWhy it changes the number
Product directionMagnetic, gravity, dashboard, charging or bike holder — each has a different bill of materials.
VolumeUnit cost falls with quantity; tooling and setup are spread across the run.
Materials & finishMaterial grade and surface finish affect both unit cost and tooling.
Electronics (if any)Charging adds a coil, PCB, thermal design and testing — a different cost structure.
BrandingMoulded logo means tooling; pad print or laser is a finishing step.
PackagingRetail box, blister or poly bag each carry different setup and unit cost.
Testing & certificationAny required testing adds cost and time — confirm what your market needs.
TimingA tight window may need faster tooling or premium freight.

The quote itself should be itemised

A useful quote separates the one-time and per-unit parts, so you can see where the money goes:

  • Tooling / setup — one-time, per mould or print plate.
  • Sample cost — for pre-production samples.
  • Unit price — at your stated volume, with any price breaks.
  • Packaging — unit and setup.
  • Testing / certification — if applicable.
  • Terms — payment, incoterm, lead time.

Watch for: a quote that gives a single unit price with no breakdown, no stated volume, and no assumptions. Without those, it is a guess, and it will move once real specs and volume arrive.

What should be marked "to be confirmed"

An honest quote flags the items that depend on final specs rather than inventing them:

  • Exact materials and finish.
  • Testing methods and any certification.
  • Final MOQ and price breaks.
  • Sample and production lead time.

Prepare, then ask

Assemble your inputs using the sourcing brief checklist, decide your route with existing platform vs custom development, and confirm branding and packaging per the private-label guide. Then send the brief.
